Haras du Pin stud
The "Versailles of horses"
Founded in the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV and Colbert, the Haras du Pin stud farm is nicknamed the “Versailles of horses”. Perched on a plateau overlooking the Écouves forest, the estate impresses with its horseshoe-shaped main courtyard, the grand royal stables and formal French gardens attributed to Le Nôtre.
Still an active national stud farm today, the domain houses around a hundred stallions of various breeds. Guided tours of the stables allow you to get close to these magnificent animals, while afternoon equestrian shows demonstrate dressage and Norman horse-riding traditions. Children are particularly delighted by the experience.
The surrounding Écouves forest offers hiking trails and shady riding paths. In autumn, the forest — considered one of the most beautiful in France — puts on a spectacular show of colour, making the round trip from the gîte a genuine nature escape.
Equestrian shows take place on Thursday afternoons from July to September. Check the programme on the stud farm’s website before visiting to make sure you don’t miss them.
