Horse Racing in Normandy
The world capital of the thoroughbred, right on your doorstep
Normandy is the world capital of the racehorse. Breeding, training, bloodstock sales, racecourses — everything that makes French thoroughbred and trotting excellence is concentrated within a 30 km radius of the gîte. Attending a race meeting is one of the most accessible and spectacular outings the region has to offer, from summer through to autumn.
Where to watch the races?
Hippodrome de Clairefontaine (15 min) — the closest racecourse to the gîte, set in a green hollow of the Pays d’Auge. This flat racing track hosts meetings from June to September in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The lawns are open to all, admission is very affordable, and there are food stalls and picnic areas. A perfect family afternoon.
Hippodrome de Deauville – La Touques (30 min) — the most prestigious racecourse in Normandy. Every August, Deauville becomes the world capital of racing: the Prix Morny, the Prix Jacques Le Marois and the famous Arqana yearling sales bring together the global elite of the horse world. The atmosphere is smart and elegant, the white wooden grandstands are iconic, and the proximity to the beach and boardwalk makes for an unforgettable day.
Hippodrome de Cabourg (20 min) — specialising in harness racing and ridden trotting, it hosts lively evening meetings in summer. A fun and unusual evening out.
When to go?
June–September: main season at Clairefontaine and Deauville. Check the programme on the France Galop website.
August: the unmissable month at Deauville — daily meetings, Arqana sales, international jet-set.
Trotting evenings at Cabourg: July–August, usually Thursday or Friday evenings.
Autumn: a few meetings continue into October at Clairefontaine.
Good ideas
- Lawn admission is often free or under €5 for ordinary meetings at Clairefontaine. At Deauville in August, expect €10–15 for major race days.
- Arrive one hour before the first race to watch the horses in the paddock — the most impressive moment for children.
- At Deauville in August, smart dress is the norm in the grandstands (no strict dress code, but the atmosphere calls for it).
- Combine with a visit to the Haras du Pin (40 min), the national stud where some of France’s finest stallions are bred and presented.
